Healing Arkansas' Children with Open Hearts, Open Homes

family.jpgor too many Arkansas children, home is not sweet home. Each year, thousands are removed by court order because of abuse or neglect. Many have severe emotional or behavioral problems that require therapy and treatment. Placed in traditional foster homes, these children typically don’t find the special care they need and are likely to be moved to institutional settings.

That’s where Treatment Homes, Inc. (THINC) comes in. THINC trains caring foster families to provide therapeutic support and treatment in a family setting to those troubled children and youth.

THINC, a mental health organization in Arkansas, was founded in 1983 by a group of 13 foster parents and a professional social worker who recognized the need to train foster families as primary therapeutic agents. Therapeutic foster families act not only as caregivers and nurturers, but also provide treatment and support for troubled children inside the home. In contrast, in traditional foster care, these children receive any necessary treatment outside the home.

THINC was one of the first organizations nationwide to achieve accreditation from the Council of Accreditation (COA), using the national treatment foster care standards. It achieved national re-accreditation for four more years by COA in 2010. Its current executive director, Consevella James, (a licensed certified social worker (LCSW) was one of THINC’s original founders.

THINC has contracts with the State of Arkansas to provide treatment services to foster children. Additional funding comes from Medicaid, private donations and fundraising activities.
